Women of Your Age

Two years ago, I had a small outpatient procedure to address some minor "female issues". At some point during one of those doctor visits, my doctor began a conversation that had a statement beginning with "Women of your age..."

I have no recollection of what she said after that.

Women of my age? I was 38 going on 39 at the time and I certainly didn't consider myself in the "women of your age" category unless it was something like these...

"Women of your age" have jobs and children.

"Women of your age" go to the grocery store regularly.

"Women of your age" shower daily.

You get the idea.

I was pretty settled into my "women of your age" life when suddenly God threw me a curve ball. Early last month, He said (in His own way, of course)...

"Women of your age have babies."

Uhm...

What?

Yes, after three pregnancy tests to confirm what I knew in my sinking (and sick) stomach, we have begun to prepare our family for a new addition.

I was SO not expecting this.

Two boys. A good marriage. One of us still gainfully employed (which in this economy is no mean feat). I was settled.

I can't say that I'm jumping for joy. Or that I'm "thrilled" at the prospect of becoming a mom for the third time.

But it's sinking in. And the sheer terror excitement is beginning to build. I'll be 41 when this babe makes his or her appearance in early October. Sweet Son #1 will be 10. The Manimal will be almost 5.

But I got to see the heartbeat at 6 weeks. And hear it at 8 weeks. Miraculous. There's a baby in there.

Hi Baby. Hope you don't mind a slightly neurotic mommy who is a "woman of THAT age".

Congratulations!!
I am the oldest of 7 siblings and my mother was 41 when she had my youngest sibling who is just 10 1/2 yrs younger than I am.
My cousin had her 5th child 2 1/2 yrs ago and she was in her mid 40's.
Women of a certain age do it all. I am a few yrs older than you (but not by much) and while I haven't had children (due to a health issue) women of a certain age can do it all.

Awesome. It's cool that the kids are each 5 years apart. You will do great!

I have ONLY been a mom (times two) as a Woman of Your Age, so I don't have anything to compare with, but I can tell you that DAILY I think to myself, "Wow, I'd never have handled that as well as I did when I was in my 20s or 30s." I have more patience and real life experience to reinforce, in the hard moments, This Too Shall Pass and in the wonderful moments, Stop And Smell the Roses. Maybe I'm a little bit more tired than I would've been at a younger age, but what I lack a little in physical stamina, I make up for in emotional maturity. I believe you will ROCK motherhood this third time, and look and feel FABULOUS doing it. You go, Mama! xoxo

Like Megan, I've been a mama at "that age", and my doctor even had the gall to call my pregnancy high risk, even though I was perfectly healthy and fit - but it was all about the age. Well, we showed him - not one issue during pregnancy and the baby showed up 5 years ago healthy as can be. :) She's been a great addition to our family (which is now 5) and even though, like you, I wasn't expecting her, I can't imagine life without her. :)

Best wishes on your pregnancy!

I had my first baby at 39. The second at 41. Then we got a surprise bundle of joy when I was 44. A blessing, to be sure. Especially when I had been told it would be unlikely I would ever conceive due to endometriosis. And age.

Suckers.

You're in good company. There's a whole bunch of us chasing children, even though we are "at that age."

:)

Fried Okra linked to your post on Twitter. Congratulations! What a blessing this will be for your family. I hope your pregnancy is easy and that baby is healthy. I'm not in the "women your age" category, but I had many, many conflicting emotions when I found out I was expecting my sixth child. The way God chooses to speak to us is surprising sometimes. :)

After years of surgeries, treatments and unanswered prayers, I was kicked out of an infertility program as hopeless. So I scheduled a hysterecomy and enrolled in grad school ready to move on. Shortly thereafter I discovered was 7-weeks pregnant. I was nearly 44. You have no idea what kind of joy this baby will bring into your life, not just your life, but for your other children too. Expect the joy and embrace it and roll around in it a little.

Your world is about to turn upside down and you will love it (most of the time!)

SO excited for you, wish it were me!

Congratulations! So far our kiddos have kept us young (my hubs is a few years ahead of me, headed for 44 this year) and I'm with Megan, I am so much better prepared at this age than I ever would have been in my 20's
