Music Monday: Gotta Catch 'Em All

Sweet Son #1 has a slight obsession. I'm not really concerned about this one, though, because it's not illegal, immoral or unethical and, among the fourth grade males, it's pretty normal.

Pokemon.

He collects these cards with fantasy characters on them, then "battles" with his friends who also collect the cards.

I used to think it was a simple card game, like "War" or "Go Fish". You know, the higher the card, the greater it's strength? Or you'd try to pair up cards of the same suit?

My assumptions only served to reinforce the fact that I am old SO not up on Tween pop culture.

For those of you who are blissfully unaware of the Pokemon phenomenon, check out the Wikipedia page. I'll wait.

Apparently, this game is pretty serious. Each monster has several evolutions (or as SS#1 likes to pronounce it "evulsions"), as well as a variety of special powers.

While at its very core, it appears to the old, uncool parent that the game is a version of the aforementioned "War" card game, apparently there are actual strategies involved. So much so, that entire TOURNAMENTS are held where kids of all ages actually PLAY TO WIN.

Cash.

The 2009 Pokemon World Championship was held in Hawaii.

Hawaii. A children's card game, tournament form. In Hawaii.

Yeah.

How is it that kids can keep all of their Pokemon powers straight in their heads, but can't remember to clean their rooms or take a shower?
