It's Not Whether You Win or Lose...

I'm getting old.

Lately, I'm starting more and more sentences with "When I was a kid..." or "When I was your age...". I find it happens often when discussing sports.

Now, lest you think I make a habit of discussing sports, I don't. But the value of team sports and other team co-curriculars for kids has always been, in my opinion, underestimated. Cooperation is a part of life, and the sooner one learns the importance of interdependence, the smoother things will go for them.

Competition is a part of life too, although education systems over the past couple of decades have done their best to devalue this part of life. Rather than teaching children how to win and lose gracefully while respecting the work done on both sides, schools seem more concerned with not damaging the "fragile self-esteem" of the children. While I certainly want good educators to help build my child's self-esteem, I think it's absurd to teach them that competition is bad. In any sport, any activity, any task in life, there will always be those more or less competent than you. More or less lucky than you. More or less efficient than you.

You either learn to deal with it or you don't.

Which means you either become a gracious winner AND loser or you run the risk of becoming negative, bitter or arrogant, not having learned how to do either very well at all.

Andre Dawson was a great baseball player who was recently inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He learned as a child and throughout his career to be a gracious winner AND loser.

Being a professional baseball player for him wasn't as much about the notoriety, insane salaries or being on a World Series-bound team every year. It was about playing for the love of the game. It's reported that when Dawson's contract was up in Montreal, he wanted to play for one team and one team only. He sent a blank, signed contract to the manager of the Chicago Cubs. Dawson told them he didn't care what number showed up in the salary line, his blood ran Cubbie Blue.

If you follow professional baseball to any degree (or even if you don't, for that matter), you probably know that the Chicago Cubs aren't exactly known for being the winning team every year. Dawson didn't care. He knew that there was more to life than winning baseball games. He loved the sport and loved the Cubs. A living example of doing what you love and loving what you do.

Pretty good lesson, if you ask me.

My friend Stephanie is a lifelong, dyed-in-the-wool Chicago Cubs fan. She's learned a lot from Andre Dawson. You can read her thoughts here.

It's nice that in the craziness of self-esteem issues, steroid use and salary insanity, we have a few shining examples out there. Those who know that HOW you play the game determines how well you win or lose.

Love life, and it will love you back.

Shield Your Eyes!

On any given day during a Chicago winter, we're pretty used to our morning traffic reporting fog delays, snow delays, ice delays, black ice, sleet, sideways snow, and my all-time favorite "wintry mix".

You get the idea.

So you can imagine our shock and surprise, when this morning, none of those things were being reported. In fact, there are distinct signs that winter MAY be on its way out the door.

Yesterday and today, we've experienced temperatures in the FORTIES! And that's ABOVE ZERO! The Manimal actually played out in the SANDBOX yesterday while SS#1 rode his bike and didn't have to pretend he was in some new X-Games event, "Extreme Ice Biking".

And this morning, the traffic reporters in our fair city all commented on a phenomenon that we've not experienced in several months. We're being warned to wear protective lenses. To be on the lookout for a meteorological occurrence that we've simply forgotten even existed.

The infamous, somewhat mythical SUN DELAY.

Senator Mickey Mouse?

Today is the Primary Election in our fair state. Even if you're not familiar with much in our fair state, you probably have heard of our former Governor. He's made more than a few media appearances in the last year or so. His wife appeared on the show "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here", when prosecutors banned his own appearance. Recent rumblings have been made that he may show up next on Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice".

Our senators have been making news as well. The current lame duck Senator was appointed by the previously aforementioned Governor. HIS predecessor moved on to a different job.

Confused yet? Don't worry, residents of our fair state are just as confused. Today's election turnout is expected to be low, with perhaps 25% of voters casting their ballots.

Lest you think this is turning into a political post, let me reassure you.

I went to vote this morning and took The Manimal with me. He was unusually quiet, taking everything in. Our precinct location isn't completely new to him, as it's in our neighborhood clubhouse. I guess the "election decor" of voting booths and registration tables really threw him, though.

He wanted to know what we were doing, and I told him that I was going to vote. Then he wanted to know what "vote" meant. I told him it meant choosing something or someone.

He wanted to see what I was doing, so I showed him my ballot and ballpoint pen (we're a pretty low-tech site). Then I let him carry my ballot over to the box, where he (with surprising care) slid it into the reader.

As I was helping him with his gloves, he looked up and said, "Mommy, is this Disney World?"

Hmm...maybe the carnival of Illinois politics isn't beyond the scope of a four year-old after all!

Vote Early, Vote Often (or Not)

A friend of mine lives in Chicago. Actually IN Chicago. (She's not one of us suburbanite city wannabes.)

Chicago and Illinois have some pretty significant political races occurring this year, and our primary elections are coming up on February 2. Like many other places, we are able to vote early to help avoid some of the crowds, and give more people an opportunity to do their civic duty.

My friend went this week to vote, and as she was leaving the polling place, the election judges felt the need to remind her that she couldn't vote again.

Only in Chicago!

Music Monday

I didn't grow up in Chicago, but apparently this is a Windy City Christmas classic!

Chair Dancing With the Stars

One of my favorite things about living in the Windy City is WGN News. Now, while I try to stay away from the somewhat bipolar personality, the mundanity and insanity of mainstream media in general, WGN manages to infuse just enough lightheartedness into their broadcasts, particularly the Morning Show, that I don't mind watching!

Robert Jordan and Jackie Bange are two of my favorite reporters, and they complement each other perfectly as anchors. Perhaps it's because they genuinely like each other and get along off air as well...

***UPDATED: Thanks to my bloggy friend C.Beth for finding a fab little interview with Robert Jordan about the Chair Dance! Check it out here.
